Welcome to the APPCI

Overview

The Advanced Postgraduate Program in Clinical Investigation (APPCI) was first developed by the University of Florida under the Clinical Research Curriculum Award (K 30) funded by the NIH from 1999 – 2010.  APPCI provides a comprehensive didactic curriculum and training program in clinical and translational science for senior fellows and junior faculty in the health sciences.

Once accepted into the program, APPCI Fellows may complete a certificate program, or a master’s degree in Clinical and Translational Science (MS-CTS), Public Health (MPH), or Epidemiology (MS-Epi). All programs consist of a graduate study curriculum, a program of mentored research with suitable faculty and a series of support programs of seminars, visiting professorships and other presentations. APPCI Fellows are expected to prepare and submit a grant proposal to an appropriate funding agency during their fellowship.

Additional programs are available through the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) which overlap with the APPCI curriculum but are designed for pre-doctoral trainees and research coordinators.  Mentored research funding for junior faculty, also utilizing portions of the APPCI curriculum, is being developed through the CTSI.  For additional information on these opportunities, please go to www.medicine.ufl.edu/TPDP.

WHAT IS OFFERED

  • Tuition support for graduate coursework, leading to completion of a certificate, MS-CTS, MS-Epi or MPH
  • Oversight of course and research progress by the APPCI Advisory Committee
  • Review of grant applications
  • Access to faculty biostatisticians for assistance with research design and analysis in the development of research proposals
  • Opportunities for collaboration with other APPCI Fellows

Time commitment

APPCI Fellows devote ~75% of their effort to participation in the program leading to an MS or MPH degree, including pursuing the research project outlined in their application. APPCI Fellowships typically begin with the Summer B semester.

Who is eligible

The program is offered to U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals and permanent residents of the U.S. who have completed an MD, PhD, DMD/DDS or PharmD program and have a salaried position as a senior postgraduate trainee or junior faculty member at the University of Florida. International trainees and faculty with either a J-1 or H-1 visa are not eligible; however, they may enroll in any of the UF graduate courses and apply to UF degree programs with their own funding.

Individuals admitted into the APPCI who seek a degree and have not taken a standardized pre-professional aptitude test for entry into U.S. professional schools (e.g. MCAT, DAT, PCAT), or who have not completed an academic or professional degree in the US will be required to take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) before being formally admitted to a master’s degree program. APPCI courses may be taken while the individual is preparing for the GRE. The TOEFL or equivalent may also be required.
