Dr. Marian Limacher has served as the APPCI program director since its inception. She is an active clinician, researcher, and mentor. She is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Florida.

She has extensive research experience and is currently the PI for the University of Florida Clinical Center for the Women’s Health Initiative. She is the Co-PI for the R18 funded clinical trial of obesity treatment in rural women, “Treatment of Obesity in Underserved Rural Settings” (TOURS), Michael Perri, PhD, PI. She is the Chair of the Women’s Health Initiative Morbidity and Mortality Committee. She is also the site PI for several WHI substudies, WHIMS, WHISCA, and BBD as well as the site PI for two multi-center clinical trials of the treatment of stable coronary disease patients, Prevention of Events with Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibition (PEACE) and ONTARGET/TRANSCEND.

She practices clinical cardiology serving as an attending cardiologist on the in-patient and consult services of Shands Hospital at the University of Florida and as an attending echocardiographer at both Shands Hospital and the Malcom Randall Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida.

She was awarded the Health Center Faculty Prize for Clinical Science in 2000, and the UFRF Professorship Award in 2005.

Academic Interests:

Dr. Limacher is the Principal Investigator for the UF Clinical Center for the Women’s Health Initiative. She is co-PI for the clinical trial, “Treatment of Obesity in Underserved Rural Settings”. She directs the Advanced Postgraduate Program in Clinical Investigation (NIH funded K30 program) at the University of Florida, which provides a didactic curriculum and mentoring program in clinical research career development for faculty and senior fellows. She is a past member of the Board of Trustees of the American College of Cardiology and remains active on committees for the ACC, AHA and American Society of Echocardiography.
