Cardiovascular Medicine

Nuclear Cardiology Section

The Nuclear Cardiology Section includes nuclear cardiology laboratories based at Shands Hospital, the Malcom Randall VAMC, and the Cardiology West Outpatient Clinic.
Cardiology West is a freestanding outpatient facility that is managed and administrated solely by the Cardiovascular Medicine Division. The laboratory is ICANL certified and currently performs multiple outpatient studies per day including both exercise and pharmacologic stress studies. In addition, some research protocols are done in the Cardiology West facility. We also have the capability of performing equilibrium radionuclide angiography studies, measuring left ventricular function, and myocardial viability studies using delayed thallium imaging. Currently there are several research protocols ongoing in the Division related to nuclear cardiology, related to the use of sestamibi imaging in assessing the prevalence and clinical importance of mental stress ischemia in patients with coronary artery disease, and looking at the efficacy of intervention programs for patients with mental stress ischemia, and other studies related to pathophysiology of coronary disease.

At the present time all cardiology fellows receive level I training for two months in our facilities. Selected fellows may also be able to achieve level II training throughout the course of the fellowship, which allows them to be capable of being licensed in nuclear cardiology. There is also a fully-funded VAMC nuclear cardiology research laboratory. Fellows at all levels of training are involved in our research program and there is the opportunity for post-doctoral fellowships, which may last one or two years.
All physicians reading nuclear studies are credentialed by the Certification Board of Nuclear Cardiology.
