Dermatology Residency Training Information

Cutaneous Surgery (PGY 3 and 4)

Second and third year residents will rotate in the Skin & Cancer Center for 6 months. By the end of the rotation they are expected to:

  • understand the indications for and techniques of Mohs Micrographic Surgery;
  • become proficient in interpreting frozen sections of skin and mucous membranes;
  • design and perform flap repairs of different types;
  • learn to do full thickness and split thickness skin grafts;
  • utilize the concepts of first and second intention wound healing;
  • understand indications for different suture materials, knots, staples and closure techniques;
  • learn to apply different dressings, including pressure dressings and synthetic dressings;
  • learn the principles of wound care and patient wound care instructions;
  • become familiar with analgesics and how to use them appropriately;
  • acquire experience in laser surgery, chemical peels, cosmetic and aesthetic surgery;
  • become experts in universal precautions.
