Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism

Fellowship Training

The primary goal of our program is to educate physicians to become outstanding clinicians, teachers and scientists in the broad field of Endocrinology and Metabolism. The division includes faculty with international reputations in clinical endocrinology and in both basic and clinical research. Exceptionally strong clinical training exists in diabetes mellitus, thyroid, pituitary, and adrenal disease.

Endocrinology ConferenceAreas of research emphasis include mechanisms and treatment of type 2 diabetes, insulin secretion and signaling pathways, autoimmune endocrine diseases, including type 1 diabetes, thyroid cancer, drug metabolism, pharmacogenetics, inborn errors of metabolism and gene therapy for mitochondrial metabolic disorders.

Our major teaching facilities include Shands Hospital, the Veterans Administration Medical Center and the Shands Medical Plaza, all of which comprise part of the Health Science Center complex on the University of Florida campus. An NIH-funded General Clinical Research Center (GCRC), located in Shands Hospital, is the venue for many of the patient-oriented investigations conducted by our faculty.

The program consists of a two year clinically-oriented curriculum which satisfies the requirements of board eligibility in Endocrinology and Metabolism. The program emphasizes the attainment of clinical skills through intense exposure to inpatient and outpatient consultations and patient care. Specific educational activities of our fellowship program are summarized below. National endocrinology training requirements may be reviewed at the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education's (ACGME) web site www.acgme.org.

All fellows participate in clinical conferences and journal club meetings held regularly by the division. Fellows are also encouraged to attend related activities sponsored by the division of pediatric endocrinology and the Alachua County Endocrine Society.
