Overview
The goal of the Transplant Hepatology Fellowship training program is to prepare
MDs or M.D./Ph.D. postdoctoral fellows for careers as independent
investigators in academic research. The Hepatology Fellowship offers an
intensive year in advanced training to applicants who have already
completed basic Gastroenterology training. The underlying premise is
that success in an academic research career requires excellent training,
the ability to collaborate across traditional academic departments, and
the ability to translate findings from the bench to the bedside. A
diverse and experienced faculty has therefore been assembled to offer
trainees the greatest opportunity to develop careers in basic and/or
clinical research. It is our strong feeling that successful career
development requires identification and close association with a role
model who can mentor the trainee through their development within and
after the fellowship period. Thus, faculty have been selected who have
the tools and experience to serve this role in a number of broad areas
of research, including clinical investigation in hepatobiliary diseases
and transplantation, cellular immunology, mechanisms of cell injury,
stem cell biology, molecular transport, and gene therapy. The experience
and mentorship received in any one of these diverse areas should provide
trainees with a solid foundation for future success in investigative
research.
