Dr. Lottenberg has been on the faculty at the University of Florida since 1982. His activities include patient care, teaching and research. Previous administrative roles in the Division of Hematology/Oncology include division chief, director of the fellowship program, and principal investigator of the NIH T32 training grant in cancer biology. He has also been a Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Washington University and a Visiting Fellow at the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill

Academic Interests:

Dr. Lottenberg’s primary research is in health services with a major focus on the uptake of evidence-based approaches in the management of patients with sickle cell disease. He is actively involved in national and global efforts to improve the care of patients with sickle cell disease. Through his previous laboratory-based and current clinical research programs, he has been a faculty mentor for numerous students, fellows, and post-doctoral trainees. Recent educational activities include co-authoring an evidence-based medicine web-based curriculum, providing didactic sessions for trainees at the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology, and serving as an editor for the first edition of a major textbook on evidence-based hematology.

Clinical Interests:

Dr Lottenberg’s clinical activities are in Benign Hematology. He provides consultation for patients on the inpatient services of Shands Hospital and maintains an active clinical and consultative hematology outpatient practice. He has special interests in red blood cell disorders, hemostasis and thrombosis. He directs the Adult Sickle Cell Program at the University of Florida and is the medical advisor for the Sickle Cell Disease Association of Florida. He has been the medical team leader in the University of Florida Medical Center initiative in venous thromboembolism prophylaxis.
