Division of Infectious Diseases
The Infectious Disease Section has a long history of excellence. In the 1960s Dr. Leighton Cluff, Chief of Infectious Diseases at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, came as Chairman of Medicine and recruited Dr. Joseph Johnson (later became Dean of the University of Michigan Medical School), to head the division. More recently Dr. Joseph Shands, former Editor in Chief of Infection and Immunity, served as division head, and in 1991, Dr. Frederick Southwick became the present Division Chief. The division has a strong reputation for research and clinical excellence. The faculty is also receiving among the highest evaluations as teachers.
Infectious Diseases Facilities
The
Division is located in the Academic Research Building adjacent to
the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology and directly below
the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The facilities
were completed in January 1990 and include four large well equipped
laboratories, a combination library and conference room, a microscopy
and image analysis facility, a common equipment room, and office space.
J. Hillis Miller Health Center
The
Health Center complex is located on the University of Florida
campus. Shands Hospital (630 beds) and the Gainesville VA Medical Center
(190 beds) are the major referral hospitals for all of Northern Florida
and Southern Georgia. Other Facilities within the Medical Center include
the Medical Sciences Building, the Communicore Building, the 240,000
square foot Biomedical Research Building, the Human Development Center,
the new McKnight Brain Institute, and the Health Center Library. In
addition to the College of Medicine, the Colleges of Dentistry, Nursing,
Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine, and Health Related Professions are
located within the Health Center.
