Rebecca Rainer Pauly, MD, FACP

Dr. Pauly is Associate Vice President for Health Affairs, Equity and Diversity at the University of Florida. She is Associate Chair of Medicine for Medical Student Affairs, an Associate Professor of Medicine and formerly served as Division Chief of Internal Medicine (1999-2007). She is very involved with the faculty’s role in shared governance at UF as evidence by serving as the current Faculty Council President (three year elected term President-elect, President., Past President 2006-2008) of the College of Medicine and Chair (2006-2008) of the UF council and Academic Freedom, Quality, and Faculty Welfare.
Dr. Pauly a fellow in the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program for Women in 2001 – 2002. Dr. Pauly was recognized as a ‘Local Legend’ nominated by Congressman Cliff Stearns. This is an honor which is “bestowed upon women physicians who have demonstrated commitment, originality, innovation, or creativity in their field of medicine”. She has been the Women’s Liaison Officer for the University of Florida to the Association of American Medical Colleges since 2003. She completed a Provost Faculty Fellowship at the University of Florida in 2005. She is the course director of Essentials of Patient Care I - IV, a two-year continuum focused on communication, history, physical exam skills and medical decision-making for medical students and has been recognized with an award for outstanding course organization and as an Exemplary Teacher for the most recent four years.
She was recently invited to Portugal to discuss UF’s approach to teaching these skills. Her current research centers on development of on-line teaching tools for the physical exam and medical interview which have been published in the AAMC’s Med Portal.
Dr. Pauly graduated cum laude from Vanderbilt University and earned her MD from the University of Alabama School of Medicine - Birmingham in 1985. She served her residency in Internal Medicine at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, fellowship in Cardiology at the University of Alabama – Birmingham and Cardiology research fellowship at the National Institute of Health. She joined the faculty at the University of Florida in 1997. She is a Diplomate with the American Board of Internal Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
In her new role, Dr. Pauly has become involved at the state and national scene as evidenced by assuming the role of Co-chair of the Florida Alliance and being selected to present the Office of Equity and Diversity’s initiatives at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) 2006 Seattle, Washington and 2007 Washington, DC. She recently accepted the invitation to be a member of the 2008-2010 AAMC Women in Medicine Coordinating Committee.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Pauly is a wife, mother, and daughter. She is active at Trinity United Methodist Church where she serves as Chair of the Staff Parish Relations Committee. She is also active as an alum of Kappa Delta Sorority. She is an avid SEC sports fan and enjoys practicing Spanish and read for fun.
