James Robert Cade, M.D.
Dr. Cade joined the University of Florida 1961. He is internationally known for inventing Gatorade®, the first sports drink that offered both fluid and electrolyte replacement. The University of Florida has received millions of dollars in royalties from the popular drink. These funds have been used to support research projects and endowments.
Research Interest
Dr. Cade, a professor of medicine and physiology, conducts
research in kidney and liver diseases, hypertension, lupus, and
diabetes. Dr. Cade's current focus is relative to autism,
schizophrenia, serious mental illnesses and epilepsy
research. During recent research, Dr. Cade's team has
published findings in the Journal of Autism showing a possible
link between the inability to break down a specific milk protein
and autism and schizophrenia. Dr. Cade also works with
athletes to help them improve their training and performance.
