Lung Transplant Program
Overview
Lung transplantation has become an acceptable therapeutic option in patients with end stage lung diseases who have failed all possible medical and surgical interventions. Patients should be referred for transplantation when their projected 2-year survival is ~50%, so that transplantation would be expected to confer a survival advantage. The patient’s perception of an unacceptable quality of life associated with the end stage lung disease is an important additional consideration, but the life expectancy must be the overriding impetus for referral. Factored into the timing of referral must be an anticipated waiting time of approximately 12 months, during which the candidate’s condition and potential for pulmonary rehabilitation must remain suitable to undergo transplantation. With the exception of lung cancers, lung transplantation has been applied with success to the majority of end stage diseases (such as COPD, Cystic Fibrosis, Pulmonary Fibrosis, Pulmonary Hypertension and congenital heart diseases). The University of Florida performed its first lung transplant operation in March of 1994 and since transplanted over 275 patients.
