Pulmonary Vascular Disease Program
Pulmonary Vascular Disease Program specializes in the care of patients with diseases that involve the blood supply of the lung. These diseases include pulmonary hypertension, thromboembolic disease, pulmonary vasculitis, arteriovenous malformations, etc.
Treatment options for these diseases have multiplied in recent years. For example, there are now 6 approved therapies for pulmonary arterial hypertension including epoprostenol (Flolan), bosentan (Tracleer), treprostinil (Remodulin), iloprost (Ventavis) sildenafil (Revatio/Viagra), and ambrisentan (Letairis).
At least a dozen other drugs are in development for PAH, including sitaxsentan (Thelin), actelion-1, inhaled (Viveta) and oral treprostinil, tadalafil (Cialis), vasoactive intestinal peptide, and imatinib (Gleevec).
The Pulmonary Vascular Disease Program evaluates and treats patients with complicated diseases, enrolls them in randomized clinical trials when appropriate, and works in conjunction with the Lung Transplant Program and the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery when medical therapies are no longer effective.
