Didactic Teaching

Throughout the year, daily lectures are presented by the faculty as part of the Pulmonary Consult rotation at the VA Medical Center. A variety of topics are presented including pulmonary mechanics and gas exchange, pulmonary function testing, acute and chronic respiratory failure, diagnosis and management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, ventilator management, oxygen therapy, and diagnosis and management of sleep apnea.

  • On Tuesdays from 12:00-1:00 P.M., faculty and fellows present didactic talks on pulmonary and critical care medicine topics. Over a three year period, all major topics in Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine are covered with the goal of the fellow being well prepared for board exams. The pulmonary fellow prepares and presents at least two seminars per year.
  • On Wednesdays from 12:00-1:00 P.M., faculty and fellows participate in Pulmonary Grand Rounds. One fellow and one faculty will present an interesting case to their divisional colleagues. These cases are presented in a format to provide a diagnostic challenge and to provide clinical pearls regarding diagnosis and management of the condition.
  • On Fridays from 7:30-8:30 A.M., a case discussion and teaching conference is held jointly with Radiology, Pathology, Thoracic Surgery, Medical Oncology, and Radiation Oncology. Interesting cases, diagnostic challenges, and thoracic oncology cases are presented at this conference.
  • On Fridays from 12:00-1:00 P.M., faculty and fellows participate in the Pulmonary Research Conference where investigators from within the division and across the university and nation are invited to present on topics and methods relevant to the division’s research interests.
  • A Journal Club is held once a month. One faculty and one fellow present and critique a recent article from the literature with further discussion from divisional colleagues.
  • A board review session is held once a month using questions from the ACCP SEEK series.
  • Department of Medicine Grand Rounds are held every Thursday morning from 11:00-12:00 p.m. Subjects of general interest to internal medicine are presented.
  • Department of Medicine Mortality and Morbidity conferences are held on the third Monday of every month from 11:45-12:30.
  • Division meetings are held once a month. Fellows attend every other month to discuss quality assurance, practice management, etc.
