    Project Abstract:
The Art of Clinical Reasoning in Rheumatology: Curriculum for Internal Medicine Residents
Rheumatology is an exciting field in Internal Medicine and now is an exciting era in rheumatology. This new era is attracting intelligent and compassionate physicians to the subspecialty, and it is important that the academic environment nurture their inquisitiveness and enthusiasm. The ultimate goal of this project is to enhance rheumatology education for residents. We will achieve this by developing and implementing a rheumatology curriculum for Internal Medicine residents, helping them develop clinical reasoning skills in rheumatology and enhancing the development of an interdisciplinary approach to rheumatology education. The curriculum we develop will emphasize adult education theory, promote life long learning and, hopefully, stimulate interest in the field of rheumatology. By providing better rheumatology education for physicians, this curriculum will also promote improved early recognition, care, and outcomes for patients with rheumatic diseases. We plan to develop a Web-based rheumatology curriculum for Internal Medicine residents. An easily accessible and navigable Web site will serve as a resource for residents. Rheumatology faculty will be readily available to answer resident’s questions via a direct E-mail link. Our curriculum will incorporate rheumatology mini-continuity clinics for Internal Medicine residents. Evidence based medicine and critical reasoning, in combination with clinical judgment based on the uniqueness of each patient case, will be emphasized. During these clinics, the residents will have an opportunity to participate in patient counseling. Through an interdisciplinary curriculum, we will provide Internal Medicine residents with the opportunity to interface with other health care team professionals. A community-based component will allow for home visits with patients diagnosed with rheumatic diseases. This comprehensive curriculum will help Internal Medicine residents strengthen their skill in evaluating patients with rheumatic diseases and provide them with a better understanding of the intricacies involved in making a rheumatologic diagnosis and determining the best course of patient care.
