The University of Florida CTSI KL2 Multidisciplinary Program

The University of Florida CTSI announces a new research training and funding opportunity for junior faculty to foster the discipline of clinical and translational research.  The goal of the CTSI (Clinical Translational Science Institute) KL2 Program is to prepare highly motivated and talented junior faculty at UF to work in multidisciplinary teams, to appreciate that collaboration and teamwork are the expected goals and to have the skills necessary to work successfully in multidisciplinary clinical and/or translational research.

The CTSI KL2 Scholars program provides mentoring, infrastructure, salary support for protected time, and didactic training to pursue a MS or MPH degree.   We invite junior faculty (defined as within the first 3 years at a current rank of Assistant Professor) to contact Dr. Marco Pahor (mpahor@aging.ufl.edu) or Dr. Marian Limacher (limacmc@medicine.ufl.edu) to discuss the requirements for participation.

A KL2 Scholar will receive partial salary support to cover between 50 and 75% effort per year for 2 years, with continued funding possible up to 5 years.  The average salary award is estimated at $94,000 per year.  In addition, $7500 per year will be provided to support the lead mentor’s research and $1000 per year for travel to one academic conference.  Scholars will receive advice and oversight by the Multidisciplinary Advisory Committee (MAC), and tuition and fees to enroll in the MS in Clinical/Translational Science, MS in Epidemiology, or MPH programs.

The KL2 Director and the Multidisciplinary Advisory Committee (MAC) will provide overall scientific leadership and direction of the Program. They will:

  • assure coordination of resources;
  • communicate with other CTSI Programs;
  • facilitate compliance with guidelines and regulations regarding fiscal policy, human subject and animal care and use;
  • set productivity benchmarks;
  • monitor progress; and
  • promote productivity and efficiency in all activities.  The mentors and the will report to the MAC).

The mentors and the MAC will facilitate and promote interactions of the with the other trainees participating in other CTSI Training Programs.  They will also ensure that the KL2 Scholar has the appropriate amount of protected time and has access to adequate resources to conduct his/her CTS project.  Dr. Pahor will report KL2 activities to the Training Oversight Committee of the CTSI.

KL2 Scholar Milestones
Since our shared goal is for scholars to become independently funded by the end of their KL2 award period (or earlier), we set out these general guidelines for scholars to consider:

By the end of the 2nd year, and each year thereafter:

  1. 1-3 original research multidisciplinary peer-reviewed publications submitted, one of these as first or last author
  2. One multidisciplinary extramural grant of any size submitted (typically R21, R03, or other federal, state, foundation, industry, or intramural grant).

By the end of the 3rd Year
One multidisciplinary, R01 grant (or equivalent) submitted.
