Assignment of Mentors

Based on the information provided in the application process, the MAC will assign each accepted KL2 Scholar a mentoring team composed of primary and secondary mentors and at least one MAC member.  During the second program year, incoming KL2 Scholars will also be assigned a senior KL2 Scholar so that each senior KL2 Scholar will acquire mentoring expertise, an important component of career development.   In addition, the senior KL2 Scholar can assist the mentoring team in addressing the challenges encountered by the junior KL2 Scholars.   Minority and women KL2 Scholars will have a senior KL2 Scholar who is also an underrepresented minority or woman, as appropriate.

Mentoring Plan

Each KL2 Scholar must develop a mentoring plan outlining the planned didactic courses, the clinical research practicum for Phase I and II, the selected track and specific benchmarks including timelines for completion of the courses, research projects, meeting presentations, publications and grant applications. The mentoring plan will be discussed and approved by the mentoring team with the MAC providing final approval. The KL2 Scholar must also complete a semiannual progress report describing the specific activities and accomplishments and whether the benchmarks have been reached.
The semiannual progress report will include the following:
(a) a statement on the progress toward each goal;
(b) listing and grades for formal coursework;
(c) progress in clinical research projects;
(d) scientific productivity, (manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, and grants);
(e) other activities;
(f) goals for the next 6 months; and
(g) summary of the interactions of the KL2 Scholar with the mentors.
